May 2025: Meet Esther!

May is the month in which International Nurses Day is celebrated (on May 12th) in honor of Florence Nightingale, who is considered the mother of modern nursing and who founded the world's first scientifically-based school of nursing. We are excited to have several Ravens Youth pursing healthcare degrees right now and, in honor of International Nurses Day, we want to introduce you to one of them, Esther.

Esther is 20 years old, pursuing her degree in Midwifery, a path she has chosen with deep conviction. Her desire to become a midwife stems from a calling rooted in compassion, faith, and a longing to make a difference.

Esther is the youngest of five siblings. Her parents are farmers and, though they work tirelessly to provide for the family, the income has never been quite enough to keep them out of poverty, which put education for Esther out of reach. Esther's brother became her bridge to hope, introducing her to the Ravens Ministries Youth Empowerment Program. She applied, trusting God for an opportunity to study.

Ravens became her lifeline, paving the way for her to pursue a course in Midwifery, the profession she believes God has placed on her heart.

According to Esther, Midwifery is more than just a career for her. She loves it, not simply for the technical aspects, but for the deep human connection that comes with bringing life into the world. She has long questioned why some mothers and babies don’t survive during childbirth, and she seeks answers that will enable her to prevent such tragedies in Uganda.

Another burning concern that has weighed heavily on her heart is the mismanagement of mothers in health facilities. She has heard stories and witnessed firsthand how vulnerable women are often handled without care and empathy. Esther refuses to be just another indifferent healthcare worker—she vows to serve with love, patience, and the kind of grace that glorifies God. The struggles of her family’s financial hardship, her relentless pursuit of education, and her unwavering faith shape Esther into a midwife with purpose.

With Ravens Ministries' support, Esther stands firm in her conviction that she will serve, she will uplift, and she will honor the calling placed upon her life.

Esther is a perfect embodiment of the spirit of Florence Nightingale: motivated by her faith and the firm conviction that healthcare providers treat people and not problems, Esther is putting her whole self, her whole heart, into learning all she can to make the lives of her patients better. Just like Florence did. We are so proud of her!
